How to Stack IPX Systems?

Sometime multiple IPX systems are needed in one location so that more extensions can be supported. Depending on the network environment, the IPX systems can be stacked up in different ways.

All IPX systems are within a LAN environment
If every IPX system of a voice intranet is inside of a local area network, they can reach each other very easily by the IP addresses assigned to the WAN interface of individual IPX systems. Use peer-peer relationship to connect the IPX systems together to form a large "IPX" system.

Each IPX has a public IP Address
If both IPX systems in the same location have their own public Internet access, the IPX systems can reach each other using respective Internet IP addresses or their domain names. Basically, the two systems work together as if they are at different location and using peer-peer relationships. Most companies only have one Internet access, so this is not a common case.

Place 2 IPX Systems in a Private Network
If site A uses an ADSL router for the Internet access, both A1 and A2 will be in the private LAN behind the ADSL router. First, the ADSL router should be configured with DMZ or port forwarding so that IPX A1 will be exposed to the Internet. (see Howto work with firewall, Howto setup DMZ).



The 2 IPX systems A1 and A2 can be in the same LAN behind the ADSL router. Since A1 is exposed to the public network by DMZ or port forward settings, A1 is the representative for the site A, as the following.

From B's perspective, A1 is a proxy for A2; from A2's perspective, A1 is a proxy for B.
Place one IPX behind another



In the site A, IPX A1 is used as an access router and it has a public IP address. IPX A2 can be placed behind IPX A1, as the following:

From B's perspective, A1 is a proxy for A2; from A2's perspective, A1 is a proxy for B.

Using IPX Server-Client Model
If an IPX in the voice intranet has a public Internet access, i.e. it can have static or dynamic public IP address, it can be used as IPX server. All other IPX systems can be defined as IPX clients. Multiple IPX clients IPX can be at the same location. Therefore the number of extensions at the same location can be increased by adding more IPX clients to the local network.
